      I was at U of Mich from '67 to '71. Somewhere in there I took a trip to Macinac Island and saw the Governor's mansion in its prominent position on the shore. So I do have special reason to remember the genesis of Mitt, I suppose.

      I also remember "Soapy Williams", of the original "Pardon me, governor" fame. But just from the folklore, as I was elsewhere when he governed. The wikipedia article mentions nothing about excessive pardons, but Michiganders I knew mentioned that he pardoned a lot of convicts and that was the genesis of the joke. If I remember correctly.
