I was not trying to equate this incident with any particular incident that occurred in the 1964 or 1968 conventions. That was not my point. The point of comparison is to the type of news coverage we were used to in the 1960's compared to the coverage we have now. The networks used to give us wall to wall coverage and would be all over all kinds of stories, large and small. And now we have three cable stations, and they seem to be satisfied with mostly doing talking heads with personalities and pundits.

As far as comparing this incident with the Chancellor incident, however, you could make the argument that this incident is worse. Chancellor was thrown out of the convention by security guards for blocking the aisle. The CNN person was possibly subjected to a racist assault. You're right that the assault was not officially sanctioned and no doubt will be officially condemned. But it might indicate a more prevalent attitude among the rank and file than any official sources, including the media, would like to acknowledge. And that story deserves to be investigated.
