I took a class in law school about the Arctic "International Law and the Arctic," several years ago, which highlighted the issue of Arctic jurisdiction.  There is intense behind-the-scenes-wrangling going on between northern countries for proprietary rights of the sea bed.  Why?  Oil. Estimates range from huge reserves to unprecedented reserves, which makes those same countries' commitment to oil conservation and climate change action almost laughable.
