  •  what is methane ice? (0+ / 0-)

is it solid methane  or a methane saturated sea water  ice?
... what is it scientifically, physically, melting temp and heat reqd?

as methane forms from biologic decomp in freezing conditions, or is the decomposing biota geothermally heated?

Does the methane condense out and freeze as a solid deposit?

And since I go back the  International Geophysical Year of 1957 (still have the book) done at the same time the sunday comics were giving us factoids about nuclear energy such that nuclear bombs could create mountain passages and make new harbors (yep!)...can the bigger methane deposits be tented and mined and used as fuel, solving several problems while making several new ones.

The discouraging part of course is that the permafrost itself is saturated so we'd have to tent the arctic, I'd say heh, but......we have seen maps here before on dkos that show solid deposits that are known and therefore more likely to be recoverable? Or is the methane release so widespread as to be of no benefit?

And considering we are presently drilling in over a mile at the raw edge of feasibility could perhaps methane capture displace some of the energy produced  this oil? And then there is the tar sands process, displacing that energy would sure be nice...but solve some problems, add others...

I have seen in industrial fabrics trade magazines tents used for small purposes like gas collection  at landfills and undersea to capture known spot oil leaks and gas leaks so it's a pretty basic technology that would have to be massively employed. Cost would seem to be no object eventually..:<..the benefit would be to slow the eventual release of much of the thawing methane, I guess there would have to be some cogent estimate of widespread uncollectable vs concentrated collectable deposits..and woulod even matter?

    This machine kills Fascists.
