You think presidential elections are nasty now, you wouldn't believe the stuff that got spewed in the past.  1800s-era elections were utter mudfests.  Hell, there was speculation that Andrew Jackson's wife's untimely death shortly after he was elected in 1828 was due to the horrific attacks she was subjegated to by her husband's opponents (Jackson believed it).

Don't think this is a new thing.  It's just now we have a much wider media to spew this filth in.

    •  I think you're implying (0+ / 0-)

that we're in a defacto civil war.  Is that what you're saying?

    •  True enough (0+ / 0-)

I'm reading Shelby Foote's history of the Civil War and, even in wartime between elections, the mud flew, including numerous allegations of treason flung at myriad generals.

So what is the proper way to call out BS when you are supposedly a down-the-middle neutral journalist (as opposed to a op-ed columnist)?  Journalists worship the Miltonian ideal that truth always prevails in the public when truth and lies are presented together and that it is the journalists job to simply and dispassionately present what all sides are saying.

Or is there no further use for down-the-middle journalism?

I got halfway through it a few year ago. Started over w/Volume I last week.

I am really seeing a lot more reading ti now with the political insights I've picked up the past dozen years. politics is very much the same and very different eh?

And Mr Foote I think would be voting for Mr Obama were he still with us.
