We Jews who do care deeply about Israel should be Democrats.

The Republican Party doesn't demagogue on Israel so it can impress our tiny demographic. They do it for their evangelical base that believes that a Jewish state centered in Jerusalem and the reconstruction of the Temple are necessary prerequisites for Jesus to come back and rule the planet for 1000 years, converting all of us to Christianity in the process.

Given this, Jews should not trust the GOP on Israel no matter how much lip service they give to the "special relationship."

I cannot speak for other Jews, but I believe in the right and propriety of the State of Israel as a homeland of last resort for the Jewish people. But I also believe that a Jewish state must deal fairly with its inhabitants whether they are Jewish or not. It is hypocritical for diaspora Jews to demand fair treatment in their home countries and not to demand that Israel treat non-Jews fairly within the Jewish state.

And if we do not admit that the Palestinians living in the occupied territories are mistreated by Israel, we are deluding ourselves.

As a Jew who cares deeply about Israel and wishes it to survive for many generations, I want a sustainable Israel. The prevailing political arrangement in Israel, wherein half of the inhabitants of the country are denied citizenship of the land they live in, is unsustainable.

As an American Jew who believes--as all Jews, in my opinion, should--in economic and social justice, the liberation of the oppressed, equality of opportunity, freedom of conscience, and in the inalienable human rights of life, liberty, dignity, and the pursuit of happiness: I am a Democrat.
