  •  I happen to be a true believer in evolution. (0+ / 0-)

We will change or go extinct.  We can let that change happen naturally with the risk of extinction from either taking a "wrong" turn or changing too slowly, or we can use our big brains to assert our will on our own evolution.
Let science experiment with humanity a bit inserting adaptive traits.  We have so much marvelous diversity of humanity and even other gene pools to access.  I truly think that the survival of human consciousness is dependent upon our ability to diversify ourselves to live under more cyclic and sustainable conditions.
Some of us could return to the sea, some will take to the sky and some of US will roam the restored and ancient plains.  All these adapted versions of higher consciousness capable of self awareness and enlightenment.

Like the premise of some really bad post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel. :)

    •  That's not exactly evolution (0+ / 0-)

that you're talking about.  The term you're looking for is "genetic engineering".  Genetically engineering a superior race of humans.  There are so many things wrong with that I don't even know where to begin.  I'll repeat myself by saying first that we can't because while we're technologically advanced sufficiently to attempt it, we lack the knowledge and expertise to do it well.  It will involve experimenting with human beings, and failed attempts will be born and grown into humans that undergo unimaginable ostracism and suffering.  It's just such an awful idea, like something out of a bad sci-fi novel.  Unimaginable horror is what you're proposing.

      •  As a species, we are not diversified enough. (0+ / 0-)

We are all tapping into the same niches to sustain ourselves.  Not necessarily "superior" but, instilling human consciousness and intelligence into other niches of the natural world such that no habitat or natural resource is over-taxed. I would like to see long term survival of a from of human sentience.
