  •  I know quite a few young (mid-20s) people who are (12+ / 0-)

very religious and entirely single-issue abortion voters. They know nothing about economics or labor or civil rights, but they know that Obama believes in legal abortion and they will not vote for a baby killer. They would vote for Satan himself if he said he was pro-life.

It blows my mind that otherwise very educated people (engineers, computer scientists, etc) would totally throw logic out the window to support a candidate that they know nothing about just because of abortion. But that's what they do.

...a few younger people of the same ilk, and it is my opinion that this is a cop out position for them.  They have some kind of visceral opposition to Obama and "liberals" and can't articulate it beyond the abortion issue.

In fact, I even know a few people in their 60s that are the same way; after Ryan was selected (I live in Wisconsin) I got to hear how excited they all were about him.  When I pointed out that he voted in favor of the bail out programs and that his voting record clearly betrayed his "fiscal conservative" moniker, I got a lot of blank stares.   And then the abortion issue came up again.

It's like their fall back position when the facts get in the way of their ideology.

      •  There is a brainwashing network out there that (7+ / 0-)

taps into the mainstream denominations and is powered by individual contributors with fervent convictions as well as a few superwealthy ultra-rightist and televangelists.

They have convinced people within the reach of this network that the "sin" of abortion is based on a belief in the infallibility and completeness of the Bible, which is to be read as the literal truth. So you will have people like my brother, who has a degree in physics, assert the literal truth of the Bible, even when he knows, as a poet, that much of the Bible is metaphor and myth.

The "sin" of abortion is attached to the literal truth of the Bible which is attached to the literal truth of the promise of eternal life.
Their defense of the whole package is existential.
This is why it's possible to motivate an anti-abortionist to go out and kill and be killed over the issue.

People that think anti-abortion is a "sideline" or fallback position don't know very many of those people that well. They also haven't looked at the trajectory of American history in the last 30 years.

As with anything else, there are the "true believers", then there is a more passive element with less conviction, and of course, leading them are the demagogues and con artists.  But abortion is the core driving issue on the right.
I think your comment is correct in diagnosing a large group of people who just participate in "group-think", uncritically. They're just going along with the herd.

You can't make this stuff up.

Rep. Ben Lujan (D) of Northern NM.
          No "issue" mentioned except abortion.
This nut case is going to lose.

They all talk a good story about how when something bad happens to them or theirs, be it whatever, a shoplifting charge, a drug offense, a DUI charge, or a pregnancy, it's always "they're basically a good person who had a lapse of judgement".  It's all the other thieving fornicating drunken junkies that need to suffer the consequences.  For the lily white god fearing conservatives, there's always the money for a good lawyer for the pot bust or a trip out of state (or out of country) to have that pregnancy issue resolved.
