    ...and political operatives whose job it is to drive these kinds of wedges.  RockyLabor is correct.

    The quest for single payer is on the same level with the civil rights movement...and it will take that scale of action to win this battle.

      This is key, and it's why single payer is a long shot at best. African-Americans had to engage with Jim Crow every day; people engage with the health care sector only when they are sick, and usually old and stick. It's just not the stuff of a mass movement.

      As much as my heart is with single payer, I've concluded that the right approach for liberals is to deal with the system we have and push for nuts-and-bolts reforms that add value by improving quality and reducing costs and that expand access. This may not set anyone's hair on fire, but it will accomplish more.
