40 years on I STILL remember the exact time I once ran for a HALF-marathon, even though it was self-timed with no other people present.  Literally a few seconds quicker than 3-hour-marathon pace.

It was my last year of high school, and the only time I ever dabbled in athletics (and I only did it then to provide a running partner for a friend who was having a go that year).  We were doing 5 miles or so every other weekday as a conditioning run, and I just wanted one evening to see how far I could go, so I measured the distance round the perimeter of the cricket field at the local primary school and started running.  Interesting to note that at 2/3 distance I felt that I could keep going forever, and was considering trying the full marathon distance, but those last few laps of the half-marathon were physically the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

Anyone who claims better than 3 hours for a marathon when they were never even close is contemptible.
