  •  I took a quick look at the numbers (0+ / 0-)

Power wheelchair costs (legit + fraudulent + improperly documented) as % of Medicare budget:

    1999     0.3B / 212B = 0.14%
    2003     1.2B / 276B = 0.43%
    2007*   0.2B / 375B = 0.05%

*Medicare budget minus '07's 12% cost for Medicare Part D, which was added in '06.

I definitely don't want my tax $$$ going to fraud, but even supposing, arguendo, 50% of Medicare payouts on power wheelchairs are fraudulent, that's [0.1/375 =] 0.027% of the '07 Medicare budget.

The 2013 budget is 523B, spitball Part D as a conservative 13%, subtract it to keep the numbers comparable to '99 and '03, and let's say power chair costs jump to 0.4B. Unless my arithmetic has gone astray, that'd be [0.4/455 =] 0.09% of the Medicare budget, 0.045% of it fraudulent.

Compare this to the 60B we burned to waste and fraud in Iraq -- 2% of the 3T cost of that war.

2011 OIG report on power chairs:

A major problem continues to be inadequate documentation of medical necessity, without which the validity of claims can't be properly assessed.
