  •  I think he used U6. But it's a very high estimate (3+ / 0-)

    of unemployment and it's pretty much never below 7%. Right now it's at 15%. Given that there are 155 mln people in the labor force, you get about 23 mln.

    The U6 unemployment rate counts not only people without work seeking full-time employment (the more familiar U-3 rate), but also counts "marginally attached workers and those working part-time for economic reasons."

      I have only an impression, but I do not remember the media reporting the U6 during the Bush years. It's as if they only discovered the phenomenon of "marginally attached workers" after Dubya left office.

        It measures both unemployment and underemployment combined. All the data is in the link I posted. It was 14% in 2008 and got to 17% in 2009. About 7-8% during most of 2000s.
