    When I was turned down by private ins company, I was offered the benefit of the CA high risk pool - but there is a catch

    the only reason I could buy into it was because I had never let my other health ins coverage lapse (COBRA was about to expire)

    Also, the high risk pool policy was just for me (@$1500/month) not the rest of my family, so we still needed to purchase a private policy for them (another $1500/month)

    Until you have had to deal outside the employer provided health plans, you have no idea how complicated/impossible/expensive it can be.

    Oh, and the reason I was denied was because my cholesterol was too high - but it was the good cholesterol and my doctor refused to treat it.
