that in all likelihood, Mike is dead.

The fact that Walter kept such an incriminating piece of evidence as the Walt Whitman book (possibly/probably because of the inscription "To my other favorite W.W. It's an honour working with you. Fondly G.B." which fed his ego) lying around in the open leads me to believe that there are other incriminating things out there.

That being said, I could not possibly have been more wrong about Todd, could I.

    ;-)

I've seen some reviewers complaining that they thought it wasn't believable that Walt would have the book sitting on the back of the toilet. But it's entirely consistent with previous actions by the character.

Walt's carelessness with his "second phone" is the entire reason Skyler found out about his meth dealings.

As for Todd... I've seen some comments where people are guessing he'll end up as the new Meth King of New Mexico at the end of the series. :-)

but theoretically, it would seem that Walter could (attempt to) explain away the inscription (assuming Hank directly confronted him about it, which I don't think will happen) by saying that he and Gale had worked together in some other professional capacity... them both being chemists and all.

I don't remember whether Hank had asked him if he knew Gale (in a presumably non-meth-related capacity) when that whole situation went down.

The book doesn't really prove anything. At most, it proves that Walt knew Gale. It doesn't prove Walt is Heisenberg, even when put together with Gale's notebook that Hank already had.

However, the circumstantial evidence in addition to the book is pretty damning.

          • The lab equipment stolen from Walt's school.
          • The changes in personality of both Walt & Skyler.
          • The sudden influx of money.
          • Walt resembles the drawing of Heisenberg.
          •  If Hank did ask (at the time) if he knew Gale... (3+ / 0-)

and Walter said no, I think that would make the book far more incriminating in and of itself.

just kill himself, after realizing that his inability to put clues together rivals the cops on "The Killing."

I have to say to the show's credit, in all of the aspects of his investigation, you never get the feeling that Hank is incompetent. It's more the circumstances have (until recently) conspired against him to never really get the one clue that will bring it all together.

At most he's guilty of never really thinking of Walt as being capable of being a criminal, and has a blind spot.

You were talking about ways they could go with this. I wonder if maybe Walt and/or Skyler might try to hold Hank's medical care over his head if Hank pushes too hard? I can see Walt saying that he will implicate Hank in the conspiracy if Hank wants to go all the way, since Walt's drug money paid for Hank's rehab.

I've never once thought to myself, "Dammit, Hank... how can you not see that Walter is Heisenberg!"

The big question, I think, is: who was Walter on the run/hiding from in the season opening sequence... the DEA... the Arizona crew... Lydia & the Czechs... Todd/the Aryan Brotherhood... Jesse... someone else?
