    but they had to work at it.  Being in college could get you out, but you had to be sure not to flunk out.  Even W couldn't do absolutely everything he wanted.  To an entitled person, even the least inconvenience seems horrific.  So they had a stake.  And the middle class worked like crazy to get out of the draft and usually didn't go--but they knew they could.

    My husband carried his draft card around for years after the war ended. It was as necessary as a driver's license.

    Toward the end of the war the lottery was instituted and there were fewer ways to dodge the draft.

    Five years after I chose my username, happily living somewhere else.
