      perhaps you'd care to elaborate for the tens of millions of Americans who I read about right here at DailyKos who didn't have sufficient money last year to buy enough food to  keep their families from going hungry?

      Or the hundreds of millions globally who survive on about 30 cents a day for food?

      I'm not taking a stand here wrt "organic" (what ever that means, since there really aren't any enforced/enforceable standards)  - just pointing out that one has to have a fairly secure economic footing to even be concerned about or aware of this issue.

        Being able to do something about it is different than being concerned.  I put it to you that a LOT of people are concerned about their food.

          Being able to do something about it is different than being concerned.  I put it to you that a LOT of people are concerned about their food.
          The bottom line is the "a lot" may be true, but it's far, far from being ubiquitous . . . .  as Chipotle has found out:
          In a nutshell, Chipotle has a product that is leagues ahead of most fast food restaurants in terms of responsible sourcing and organic content. But until recently the majority of their customers didn’t care. They just came for the great taste.

          Actually, this isn’t hard to understand. One look at OgilvyEarth’s Mainstream Green study confirms the vast majority of Americans think green is synonymous with high priced elitist fare that will single you out as a hippie or snob. Definitely not the persona of the average fast feeder.

          And I say good for them for working on this!   But at the same time it underscores that "food awareness" is not quite at the level you're estimating it to be at.

              obtuse if you think I'm condoning our current Agricultural system.

              I'm not, HFCS is especially idiotic (enabled by tax policy more than anything else).

              I'm just pointing out that "organic" farming is not necessarily a panacea wrt to global issues.  But again, insofar as it's a nice luxury that some Americans can afford - good on them!

        I can. I agree with your point a bit. I have argued with Michael Pollan about how hard is it for some to have access to good food.

        I'm self-employed, no insurance, make $9,000 a year. At some point, and I think this was before I got cancer, I decided that what I put in my body was so important that if it was a choice bewteen crap and nothing I would choose nothing.

        So sometimes for lunch I have an apple when I could get fast food for cheaper and it would be more filling. My stomach wouldn't growl in the afternoon.

        I am looking long term here.

        (which is healthier anyway), your food dollar stretches a lot farther.

      the higher quality nutrition satisfies the body's nutritional requirements better. A friend of mine does bio-dynamic farming (US DEMETER: http://www.demeter-usa.org) and when we lived in the same town (in Germany), I would help her sometimes and get my organic fruits/veggies in exchange. Unfortunately, she moved elsewhere and then I did, so I now get my organic food locally. The biggest problem I have with organic food is just that it TASTES so much better, I tend to eat more than I need...  Best solution, if possible: grow your own veggies. If you don't have a garden, get together with friends and make a communal one.

      That study is bunk. You only need to taste the difference - there's no contest.
