  •  The demons have been there for many .. (6+ / 0-)

and not just Vietnam vets. My wife has been researching the genealogy on my side of the family, and though we knew that my great-grandfather had spent the last 25 years of his life in state custody in a hospital for people with mental disorders we never knew the details of how he got there. All we knew was that he shot the Italian counsel in New Haven and was determined to be insane and committed.

What we found out later was that after he had emigrated to America he had gone back to fulfill his Italian Army obligation and ended up in some very nasty business in eastern europe near the end of WW1, for which he won a high honor from the Italian government (we're still trying to nail down the details there also). When he got back to the US he found his wife had divorced him in his absence, and this, combined with what we assume was a case of PTSD, lead to his unraveling and the eventual shooting and his commitment to the hospital. The notice of his award was published in the local paper two years after he was committed ..
