No point at all in doing that if the Dems don't also capture the House. Keep in mind if Obama is re-elected, the 2014 Senate map is very unfriendly to the Dems.

    •  Senate confirmation of appointments (4+ / 0-)

is the #1 reason to do it.

There are 95 current or pending vacancies in the federal courts, and likely 100-200 more during the next presidential term. Not to mention appointments to federal agencies (NLRB, CFPB) that Republicans have filibustered, as well as potential Supreme Court nominees.

Even if the House remains in GOP hands, the Senate could get far more done without having to cobble together 60 votes to agree to debate the end of debate...

judicial appointments (and maybe some Supreme Court ones, too), that would be a big relief.

Since the right isn't going to vote to approve any candidates anyway, might as well put in real progressives and dispense with trying to peel off some votes. Ain't-gonna-happen.

When the GOP wins power back and there is no brake - will you still think it's worth it?

        •  Yep - Dems don't abuse the filibuster (0+ / 0-)

because Republicans scream bloody murder and threaten to use the 'Constitutional option'.

In other words, Dems cave and don't filibuster, so Republicans get whoever they want on the courts anyway.
