  •  But aren't we glad SHE didn't say that? (9+ / 0-)

The classiest thing that Michelle did last night was what she didn't do, which was bring up people like Ryan and Romney.

We don't lift ourselves up by talking other people down, and that's just the truth.

Barack and Michelle are doing that THING, that amazing thing, of living an example of what they believe. That's so old school. And we need more of that, because we the people of Earth are running really short on role models these days.

They do a phenomenal job of staying classy. Shouldn't stop us from using the idea with people we talk to if it helps frame the difference in a way they can understand.

Fantasy is not necessarily a bad thing so I don't see it as talking others down. It is simply a dream that is too improbable for the individual to realize. A very small percent can. It just isn't realistic to suggest more people should be able to. Like telling people to borrow money from their parents to start a business. Maybe their parents know better than to put their retirement savings into the dreams of a young adult who doesn't have the experience or skills to pull off the dream.

William Ellery Channing wrote a beautiful piece on this.

To live content with small means,
to seek elegance rather than luxury,
      and refinement rather than fashion,
      to be worthy, not respectable,
      and wealthy, not rich,
      to study hard,
          think quietly,
            talk gently,
              act frankly,
to listen to stars and birds,
babes and sages, with open heart,
      to bear all cheerfully,
      do all bravely,
      await occasions,
      hurry never.
In a word, to let the spiritual,
      unbidden and unconscious,
to grow up through the common.
This is to be my symphony.

It's the GOP problem with reality in the big picture of life. For too many, hard work doesn't necessarily bring the basics, let alone a lot of extras.
