    The population growth issue is quite cyclical, but you're right the economy needs XXX thousand jobs to keep pace with growth overall. Where the population is growing is critical - demographic bumps coming up from the 18-23 year olds versus those entering into retirement is the really key number. This is not bad performance considering the number of fresh job seekers in the market that tend to show up in the August and September reports after June graduations.

      seasonally adjusted to negate this issue:

        These numbers are always "seasonally-adjusted, nonfarm payrolls"

          at least based on my memory of recently reading how "seasonal adjustments" have been messed up of late (for example, automakers are shutting down their assembly lines at different times than they have historically to set up for production the next model year . . . .).
