Don't get me wrong, not all NFL fans are like this, but I would be confident in saying at least half are.
I imagine football fans are pretty much like the public in general, some racists and far right crazies but most sane and reasonable. But if you notice almost all public internet forums are dominated by wingers and the crazy.

You're probably right. I retract my earlier statement of "at least half". I just go through reading a bunch of jackasses who were crapping all over players for having brain damage, and that comment was written in anger.

Half was too extreme. I would say, however, that I disagree that they're "pretty much like the public in general". I do still think there is a higher percentage of teahadist/douchebag/wingers in NFL fandom, just not quite as high as I indicated.

perception probably comes from the high number who are louder, bigger and very uninhibited about sharing their opinions on this compared to other fans.

They're the kinda people your sig is aimed at ;)

I from a big family of ex-jocks and our houses are often full of big, trash talking fans on game day. But there isn't a winger in the lot... most of us are minorities though so maybe I'm not around that crowd.

I also think a majority of fans will support Kluwe in this mess.

...is one that comes up a lot on these sports forums. There is a whole subset of sports-oriented dogwhistles that runs through the commentary, and a lot of just plain whistles. "Thugs" and the like. It's awful. Every black quarterback is invariably compared to JaMarcus Russell, despite having nothing else in common.

The whole "mobile" and athletic" QB dogwhistle is bothersome. They always mean Michael Vick, and they always mean the black QB can't win a championship because they use their "legs" (read: athleticism, 'cause that's all the black player has, right?) instead of their "arm" (read: brain, because they're not smart enough, right?). It's infuriating.

Grrr. Okay, getting angry again. I do agree that a majority will side with Kluwe. LGBTs are more accepted than ever, which - IMHO - is why the extremists are trying so damn hard to marginalize them.
