  •  Ah--hem! (4+ / 0-)

Here we go again.  The type of riding and the reasons for it are each unique.  Dressage training for the horse, came out of warfare needs before motorized vehicles.  A horse with such training was very valuable.

It is my understanding that some mounted police patrols are now giving their horses basic dressage training.

You sound just as prejudged on the subject as my mother was.  "If you learn English, you can ride any critter, even a camel."   I have yet to test her theory.  : ^ )

But I do know the horn would get in the way of my stomach, jumping in trails in the woods.  When was the last time you roped a calf?

Maybe you have, in which case you needed a Western saddle.  The cavalry saddle is probably the best all-around saddle, but rarely seen these days.

Good ole' put downs are not necessary.

about that being a separate issue.

However, it beats a cavalry style CHARGE! into a group of unarmed people.  A lot fewer injuries to all.

IF (and that's a big IF) it's not abused, anytime the horses are better trained and under better control, it's better for all.  Just as one cannot blame Rafalca for who she is and who owns her, lets not blame the horses in these situations, but seek to keep things as calm as possible.

Bloomberg's use of the mounted patrols is another matter.

NYPD horses. They certainly didn't choose their job any more than Rafalca did.

are the Central Park carriage horses.  Heat, freezing rain, slippery streets, salt, strange noises, taxis, snow & cold ....the list goes on.  Almost every week, there is some sort of accident or incident.  Just a couple of weeks ago, one 5 yo gelding rebelled and took off for a couple of blocks, sans dumped carriage.  They look sooo defeated as they stand there.

I think I read that even Bloomberg's daughter who rides semi-professionally on the show circuit, tried to influence her father that they needed to be banished.
