When Clinton deviates from his prepared text, I suspect it's because he wrote the speech as an outline rather than a finished product.

Reading the New Yorker article, you almost get the sensation that the speech on the Teleprompter is an alien entity. Sometimes it may be, but this isn't - this is Clinton's own creation.

I've never spoken at any venue even remotely comparable to this one, but when I speak I don't write thins out verbatim - I write notes to work from. If I read a prepared talk it feels stilted. Mid-delivery, when you hear and feel the words, there's always a better way to phrase things - one that probably wouldn't have looked right on paper.

I'm only a mediocre communicator. Clinton is an amazing speaker. He's also truly in his element when he's with people. In the moment, feeding off the energy of the crowd, he can probably turn a phrase in a way he never could sitting alone at this desk.

The New Yorker made it sound as though Clinton had nothing to do with writing the speech and improved it on the fly as it scrolled by on the teleprompter. I doubt that's the case.

I also didn't agree with the sentence that threw Bush jr. and Obama together as "good at reading from teleprompters."

He wrote prepared remarks for the convention--I assume that's what was on the teleprompter--  but he knew what he wanted to say so that was just a really loose guide.  like note cards, as others have said.  That's what the best speakers do, anyway.

that the party shortened Clinton's speech, and he just put back in the richer version as he went.
