  •  Do you think his campaign was aware of this? (0+ / 0-)

I am not trying to challenge you or pick a fight. I genuinely wonder, even if his campaign knew this, did the average voter?

I didn't know this, but I was perhaps a bit too young to follow this at the time.

Reagan was a likable guy. He was avuncular, genial and inspired confidence.

He, in my opinion, was not a bad man at heart.

But, his charm and trustworthiness were a mask that hid an inexcusably under-informed, wrong-headed, tool for the extreme right wing cabal that led us on this miserable journey to where we are today.

I doubt Reagan ever had an original thought, he was the perfect empty vessel to be filled with the downright un-American, and even evil schemes, that  permeates the rotted corpse of his party today.

But, back to my question, do you think this is a case of ascribing mal-intent where mere incompetence would do?

I mean, wouldn't Memphis, where Dr. King was slain, have been a more obvious choice? I don't know. Maybe Repubs were more well read in those days, but if the Repubs chose Ford theater today as a convention spot, I bet 98% of the rank and file repubs wouldn't make a connection.

    •  Read up on it. It was no accident. (2+ / 0-)

The Reagan campaign was courting the white Southern bigot vote. It was no accident that his kick off speech was in a town of less than 10,000 people that happened to be the place where those civil rights workers were brutally murdered.
This was no more of an accident than Reagan's campaign negotiating with the Iranian "students" and recieving their guarentee that the hostages would not be released until after the 1980 election.
I hope that you will check out Krugman's take on the revisionists from years ago:

      They knew.

The Republican motto: "There's been a lot of progress in this country over the last 75 years, and we've been against all of it."

It seems his many gaffes were indeed deliberate, despicable behavior.

Thank you for pointing this out, and thereby removing even the slightest doubt Reagan was not merely a dupe, but a plotter too.
