      Anderson debated Reagan because Carter refused to take part in a debate with two republicans. Reagan refused to debate without Anderson until the end, when he capitulated in response to Carter moving in the polls.

        He ran as a New Democrat/Rockefeller Republican.

        Basically an option for:
        Moderate Republicans who were scared of Reagan or Democrats who didn't like Carter.

        Both my parents voted for him.
