My county, Roscommon in northern Michigan, is  rural, small town, woods and waters, summer at the lake, and 98% white.  The political style here is small town Republican, with a strong minority of labor Democrats anchored by UAW retirees.  Our Democrats have often been distracted by Republican racism, gunism, jingoism etc., which makes for tough elections for traditional Democratic candidates.  Our House member in Washington (Dave Camp these days - yuck!) has been Republican for as long as I can remember.

In a hope filled season, 2008, the county went for Obama.  The mood ever since has been grumbling disappointment and outright Fox fueled paranoia.

The most interesting thing this year is the almost complete lack of interest on either side in the upcoming election.  Few yard signs and bumper stickers, nobody's watching the Fox channel at the Silver Dollar, and the fired up Obama grassroots machine of 2008 is not happening.  At Fred's last night there was a group of deer hunters watching the US tennis open!

I'm wondering if the "likely voter" model means a damned thing this time, and think that turnout, or the probable lack thereof, will be the thing historians will be talking about come December.

If you think you've got it bad, I live in Camp/Stamas/Mackinac Center hometown.  When I've gone to our cabin in Manistee County I've often removed my Dem bumper stickers but, interestingly, I've seen more Obama yard signs up there this year.
