  •  on my way to work in Bala Cynwyd, PA (5+ / 0-)

I had just crossed the bridge to City Ave. when it came over the R&B station I was listening to that the WTC had "exploded."  I turned to the news station and sat, gape-mouthed at a redlight, as they recounted what was known at the time (about 5 minutes to 9.)  I called my mom, who was also my boss, and asked her whether the office was opening that day.  she was incredibly shaken and said it wasn't, and to go home.

instead, I went to my then-girlfriend's house, which was about 5 mins from where I was.  I'd JUST missed the second plane hitting the towers, and her and her mom were in tears.

we (me, my girlfriend, and her mom) sat and watched CNN all day, not even stopping to eat until about 3PM.

since I was devoting most of my attention to comforting my g/f and her mom, the emotion of the day didn't hit me until the tower collapsed on all those firemen.  at that point I sobbed uncontrollably for I don't know how long.

fun fact.  my current girlfriend did and does work for the philly fed.  at the time, she worked in "checks" which was the department that processed bank transactions.

SHE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO GO HOME UNTIL SHE FINISHED THOSE TRANSACTIONS, EVEN THOUGH THE INTERSECTION AT WHICH THE FED IS LOCATED HAS THE MINT, THE LIBERTY BELL, & INDEPENDENCE HALL, AND WAS ALMOST CERTAINLY THE TARGET OF FLIGHT 93. she's told me that when she left, downtown philly was a ghost town.  the only souls present were national guardsmen on post.  as you can see, the fact that she wasn't allowed to leave flabbergasts me to this day.  (she doesn't work in checks anymore)
