And jammed 30 or 40 to a class.

But it's about a lot more than just kids and schools, too.  Education reform groups, especially but not only conservative ones, have been spending a LOT of money in Illinois the past few years. They want to break the back of the union here as part of the effort to end public school as we know it. (and funnel money to education corporations.)

It's no exaggeration: Chicago teachers are fighting not just for the kids of everyday people, but for the very future of working people and middle-class families.

      I agree wholeheartedly.
It is so frustrating when the media showcases a charter school and gives an incomplete explanation about its performance.   These shiny stories are misleading if they don't provide context.

This is just another front in the national philosophical debate about the public sector and how it figures into a modern democratic government.   Privatizing is not really about the balance sheet at all.  We have to be able to make the argument once again for the public sector and good government and the crucial role it plays in a fair and just society.
