    we have the propensity to try to stick a label of intelligence on every other species, instead of trying to understand the fact that intelligence works differently for different species. For example, dogs aren't dumb, they're just good at doing dog things, etc.

    It's entirely possible that neanderthals were 'dumb' at certain things we are good at, while they were amazing in ways -- as you say -- "we cannot know" at other things, and vice versa.

    Perhaps, had neanderthals survived, they would have been artists beyond compare, or have had the foresight to innately understand that extracting things from the earth comes at great environmental cost in ways that it took us decades to learn (and still, by and large, not care about). Who knows?
