Curiosity does have much higher bandwidth up to orbit and back to Earth than its predecessors, however, as well as a lot more cameras (17). Several of these are full-color cameras, some are capable of taking video, and there are high-magnification cameras for taking both close-up and distance shots. There are also color filter wheels for the mast cameras for Arelogical (?martian geological) purposes.

Curiosity's computers are powerful enough to do some compression on the images before they are sent to earth. According to Boing Boing, two different algorithms are used: a lossless algorithm for high-quality images, and a lossy algorithm where speed is paramount.
