    But I see your point.  It's because Mars has an atmosphere, so there are atmospheric effects on the light that makes things look more familiar.  The Moon is just harsh, totally unfiltered light with razor-sharp shadows and its coloration doesn't vary much.

      conspiracy theorists think this was done on a movie set (yahoos, cough cough).  They see the harsh light and make a sensory association with movie sets.

        no scifi movie in history has managed to look as realistic and awesome as photographs taken in 1969-1972.  But I suppose the conspiracy has extended to the movie and TV studios agreeing not to use the magic FX technology for half a century.  Instead we get space depicted as some wispy purple cloudscape.
