Where in the hell do I talk about hating soldiers, or veterans, or their families.

I served in an infantry squad that was wiped out in Korea. Each day of my life I think about the death of all of my buddies. They were real heroes. Most people who wear a military uniform never spend a day in the front line. To suggest that my dead buddies deserve no more respect than someone who has never seen a minute of action is nutty.

War is costly. Peace is priceless!

I grieve with you for the loss of your outfit. I do.

But to suggest that there's less value in the deaths, less worth in the service, of veterans from Vietnam -- or later, especially somehow that their service is worth less because they were volunteers, as your comment "lives lost -- not given" does ... I will always disagree. Always.

Not least because I served in the Cold War, post 'Nam, or because my kid brother came back from Desert Shield/Storm with a Bronze Star he won't say anything about, or because my neighbor across the street has been to the sandbox three times. But also 'cause I had cousins in the 'Nam, stateside as well as overseas, and uncles in Korea, and uncles some of whom were killed in WW2.

Today of all days is a bad day to be trying to pick out who's a legitimate hero, I think.
