Romney needs to campaign on domestic economic issues and avoid any association whatsoever with the second Bush administration.  By attacking Obama for weakness abroad, he himself shifts the focus to the area where he is weakest, while, at the same time, foregrounding his connection with wildly unpopular neocon radicals in a place where the continuities with W's team are strongest, foreign policy.

Anyone who would describe what we're seeing as Romney's "strategy" makes a serious mistake.  And while Romney's antics are killing him, to describe what he's doing as "dumb" also misses the mark.  It is the logical outgrowth of a candidate who stands for nothing and represents a party with wildly unpopular views and therefore must only talk about what a horrible President Obama has been any time a real or imaginary opportunity presents itself.
