  •  No longer the 'refs' (3+ / 0-)

    For a number of reasons:
First, the super compartmentalization of media consumption. It is different when there were only 3 network  30 minute news programs a day and 1 -2 newspapers in any particular locale. Today we have several cable outlets, plus the networks and numerous presence of blogs, social media and print presence on the internet. Each of us can tailor the kind of media message we wish to receive, even if it is a fact free zone.

Second, the movement away from trained print journalism to communication news-entertainment. Blonde, blow dried, capped teeth and able to read a teleprompter has more cache today. Face it, Woodward and Bernstein couldn't break Watergate in this media environment.

Third,  media as corporations have a different prime objective. It is no longer 'news that is fit to print' to retention of shareholder value.

Fourth, as everyone has cited here, the MSM have become stenographers, latching on to sound bites and in this cycle, unwilling to call a lie a lie. I am so disappointed in Tom Brokaw and his euphemisms for mendacity--over reach my a$$!
