    In the sense that infomercials are about getting people to place an order rather than making a product that fills a need, our financial sector went exactly that direction in the last ten years or so, and the crash of 2008 was the inevitable result. Never mind whether the ab roller actually does anything useful (or even lasts a week after delivery);  if you can get people to buy it, you are a winner. Once you get the money, move on to selling your next space-saving hanger or whatever. Same with credit default swaps, collateralized debt obligations, and even the stock market to a large extent. It's what you can persuade people to give you money for... usually not money they earned, of course, but money they had to borrow. or steal. That's success as the Republicans define it.

    The idea of people working together (in a worker-owned customer-centric industry, for example) to produce results that improve life for everyone is so... so... European.
