I was under the impression it got awful reviews. I don't get pay tv so I can't say I've seen it.

reviews improved as the season progressed... from what I very briefly observed via Google headlines.  I loved the show.  And it's been renewed for next season.

If you still have video stores in your area (possibly independent ones, not sure about large chains), you can these days usually rent copies of successful cable serial shows there.  I'd highly recommend doing so; the show is a shot in the arm for those of use who've been decrying the decrease in/absence of journalism for years as corporate ownership has turned traditional news sources into infotainment.  Of course, it's fiction; only time will tell if any trad media folks look in the mirror and see themselves as failed journalists.  But the show is useful at least in that it re-presents many of the major news events in 2010-11 in ways that CNN likely would have before it was sold and decided it needed to try to compete with FoxNews...

    •  It is on hiatus - renewed for a second season (0+ / 0-)

I've watched every episode and find it almost as good as West Wing.

    •  Believe it was picked up for another season (0+ / 0-)

At least I hope that my understanding is correct as I love the show.

    •  If you never saw the first 5 minutes of it, then (0+ / 0-)

here, let me help you see why I became an instant fan of #HBO's The Newsroom (written by Aaron Sorkin, starring Jeff Daniels in the role of his life as Will McAvoy):

Go to HBO's channel on and pick a clip from the series.

But this non-HBO clip of the Pilot episode's first 8:00 minutes has the comments that reflect my feelings quite well...

"As an American citizen, it is heartbreaking to me that the most honest moment, on television, during this period in our history is a FICTIONAL tv show. It breaks my heart to see this once great country going down the proverbial tubes. I believe that our system is riddled with people that hold terrifying visions for our nation. I am terriefied at the blatent lies being told, that so few seem to recognize. I pray, that my country wakes up from the mental coma they are so clearly suffering from.

This show stunned me with the way it made years old news NEWS to me, again. It was compelling storytelling.

The biggest thing I can say about "The Newsroom"? I fell in love with the Will McAvoy character and I don't give a shit that he's a Republican. If you knew me, I mean, personally, you would know what a Big Fucking Deal that is.

Watch it. You'll fall in love, too.
