    his 2000 run was actually fairly triangulated on many issues. one of his selling points was that he did well with latino voters in texas, and the whole "compassionate conservative" shtick, as well as the AIDS in africa policy posturing, was meant to make it harder for gore to attack the GOP on accounts of being too coldhearted.

    eisenhower's the real likable GOP centrist example, having conceded much of the new deal, much to the outrage of the GOP's reactionary wing at the time, but i have a hard time imagining another eisenhower in the near or even distant future.
