    Sadly, as public money is more and more used up to pay for failed wars and tax cuts for the wealthy, there are fewer supports for people in need, such as the mentally ill.

    Prisons have become the de facto "treatment facilities" for those with mental illnesses who lack the financial resources to pay for private healthcare.

    Our police are not trained in coping with people with mental illnesses.  They are trained that if someone doesn't do what the police persons says to do, officers are allowed to exercise force.  And mostly, it is the officers' judgement as to what constitutes "enough" or "too much".

    The mentally ill are generally not inclined to advocate publcly on their own behalf.  Thank you, jpmassar, for speaking out for them.
