in Harlem Village Academies- and so are a lot of progressive educators, especially those working in urban education.

    •  Unfortunately, so are a lot of conservatives (1+ / 0-)

The difference I feel is Legend and the progressive educators you speak of, IMO, are concerned about giving everyone access to a better education. While the conservatives might say the same, in the end, to them, it is about privatizing the education budget.

      •  Sure, I get the distinction- (0+ / 0-)

and people should keep that in mind.  I've seen people here immediately jump on the charter-schools-are-always-a-bad-idea bandwagon.

In my area (Philadelphia), there's a long and very successful tradition of magnet schools (which although different from charter schools, also use public education funds to the benefit of a relatively small and selected population of students). I'd like to see the conversation change from a binary question of whether charter schools are good or bad to an insistence on excellence in all schools, whether public or charter.

And if some charter schools have shown striking results, we should learn from their experience instead of responding that some charter schools suck (which some do).

        •  IMO the purpose of charter schools is to privatize (0+ / 0-)

          the education budget.

Anything that has been accomplished in charter schools has already been done Public schools too.
We just need to identify those programs and replicate them.

We have to keep public education strong. It is a right not a privilege.
