Are you OK?  I'm purely a stranger but there's a disconcerting tone in some of what you say, even though it's been 3 years(?).  I hope your strength of character, and hopefully a willingness to get personal help should it be needed, continue to get you through this.

who know both about the struggles we've been through AND my stubborn refusal to seek professional help.  (Some of them have been nagging me about the latter for nearly 4 years.)  I'm actually not opposed to therapy--just incredibly wary of the time and expense (even when insurance covers at least some of it).  So don't worry--not offended at all.  And thank you for asking!

I've tried to help myself by being absolutely honest with myself at every turn, because sugar-coating things to myself and others doesn't help, I think.  But I tell myself that no matter how honest I am with myself (and I try to be, because I think it would be very easy to spiral into the kind of darkness that would overcome me every now and then 3 years ago if I'm not), I still need a professional, and I am more prepared for it now.  (Kids in school for a good amount of time.)

Hang in there vickie, glad to see you seem to have escaped Sandy (with NYC in your name, it's a reasonably safe assumption you're there or from there).  I trust we all have some sun tomorrow with 4 more years starting tomorrow...

        just my 2 cents.
Having taken advantage of therapy of all types at many different times.

        I would suggest the following
        - Always make sure you are comfortable in your heart with the counselor you have chosen.
        - It does not have to be "all or nothing" - IE short term, or support group, etc...

What I'm saying is you can put your toe in the water and try different things... Until you find what works for you. You don't have to make a big time commitment.
