    ... Or so I thought at the time of his comment in that interview with Telemundo.  I admit to be taken aback by his blunt use of the term "ally" in a way that reset the U.S.::Egypt relationship to a zero-sum ante -- despite treaty obligations Obama is struggling to maintain, long commercial and people-to-people ties, et. al.

    But, then, the question was asked in a non-diplomatic context, and it seemed that Obama was seizing on the opportunity to speak in the plain language that both most Americans understand and that is not likely to be mis-translated or over-nuanced in Cairo.

    It seems to have worked.
