  •  Two things: 1. After the Florida catastrophe and (0+ / 0-)

Bush v Gore, followed by 2004, grassroot Dems and computer experts were engaged and very concerned about vote counting and manipulation. It was the #1 topic of concern among the members of the Dem women's group in my county.  We held a standing-room only forum on it. Most were active against "black box voting" and you remember that NYers fought mightily to keep our old machines or at least get op scan of paper ballots that could be hand counted.

We were told by staff very close to our well-connected Congressman that we should NOT pursue this issue--the security of the vote and honest vote counting--because the National Democratic Party did not want us to.

Why? Because they were more worried that the mere discussion itself would depress our voters--that Dems would just not bother to vote at all--than they were about Diebold and Sequoia, et al helping Republicans steal elections by an almost undetectable hair's breadth, precinct by precinct.

How condescending! As if the poor simple-minded dears-- their own voters--could not possibly understand and be sufficiently mobilized.

So National Dems squandered years and a lot of energy, which allow Republicans to continue their long term voter suppression efforts, including putting Republican Secretaries of State in place in swing states, passing "voter fraud" laws, and purging voter rolls, virtually uncontested and beneath the Press' radar.

Finally, now, seeing the extent of success Republicans have achieved in the last decade making it harder to vote, making it harder to REGISTER, and putting themselves in charge of counting the votes, they are paying attention to the issue.

We Dems should cleave to an American prinicple that we are willing to go to the MAT on:

EVERYone qualified should be able to vote; and EVERYone's vote SHOULD BE COUNTED.

Anything that impedes those is UNAmerican, and UNdemocratic and should be resisted loudly and publicly.

This is an unassailable position! A populist, democratic position that all voters understand. It's just simply American fair play. At a very basic level it's who we are.

    2. A lot of momentum for rapid, electronic vote tabulation -- that makes voters suspicious and is ripe for highly scientific but almost undetectable meddling -- comes from the NEWS MEDIA. They want to announce a winner IMMEDIATELY. They want to be FIRST to announce results and they want it done before everyone goes to bed.

    Why? What's the rush?
I don't know if polling has been done on this but common sense tells us that the public would rather have accuracy than speed.

Most of all, it's NOT their election!

Elections don't belong to the media, elections officials, Parties, or even the candidates. ELECTIONS belong to the VOTERS. And their interest in a full, fair and complete process should always be paramount.

Okay, the Government says you MUST abort your child. NOW do you get it?
