  •  Yes, it will be interesting when the R's lose (15+ / 0-)

And there is an old Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times".

The thing is, some of the moderates have already abandoned the party or been run out of town, so the hard right have more strength than they used to.  The hard right will take the stand that candidates need to be even MORE conservative and that the party needs even more purity and even more purges of any apostates in their midst that dare speak of things like compromise, or even breathe a hint of sympathy for things like pro-choice or anti-austerity measures.

It will be interesting to see if, after four years of being driven underground by the Far Right, the remaining moderates actually have the cajones to come out of hiding, quit hiding their true colors in order to keep their positions in the party and seats in Congress, and actually take a stand to move the party towards the center.  I fear the party may be too far gone for that.  I think what it might take is for the party actually run a complete loon like most of their presidential candidate lineup was this year -- a real, live Bachmann or Santorum candidacy, for the Far Right to finally get discredited enough for the moderates to take a stand.  If there are any left by then.

Maybe, just maybe, someone will have the guts to try to establish a viable moderate conservative party that jettisons most of the fanatical religious social conservative crap and racist undertones that's been bogging down the Republican Party for the past thirty years.  That would be perhaps the most interesting possible result of all.

Not holding my breath for that one, though.

    •  Interesting times indeed. (3+ / 0-)

There are lots of conservatives that seem so close to becoming unglued.   The potential is there for things to get very interesting.  Dangerous even.  I hope not.

    •  I was truly hoping for Santorum to be the (0+ / 0-)

candidate just so we could get the crazy out in the open. There would have been more enthusiasm on the far right fringes, but I wonder how it would have played out with the rest of the country.

At some point, something has to give. Obstruction is no way to run a country, and going backwards socially is just repugnant to many of us who thought issues like birth control were settled decades ago, and that we had made progress on issues of race and sexual orientation.
