  •  Well, the Israelis would like us to believe this, (0+ / 0-)

in any case.  I suppose it is possible that they have operated a production scale enrichment facility for thirty years without any clear disclosure.  They seem to be rather good at security.

Where are we, now that we need us most?

    •  It's not that they're all that good at security (0+ / 0-)

(I don't think they're any different than anyone else in that regard) - it's that they are not subject to inspection by the IAEA, because they (along with North Korea, India, and Pakistan) have refused to sign the NPT.

If they're so wonderfully good at security, how do you explain Vanunu?  I have thought long and hard about that and I really do think he was an honest defector.  That has got to count as one of the biggest leaks anywhere since WWII.

      •  If you read enough spy novels, you might be (0+ / 0-)

inspired to create a plot in which Vanunu was a plant, purposed with scaring the bejebus out of the Arab states.

Actually, I think you are right, he probably was sincere.

nuclear program back then, the one thing that really would have made me twitch, is the idea that those weapons would need to be used because no one knew they existed.

When he came out and started talking my baseline assumption was that he was doing it completely at the behest of the Israeli government.  But it really does look like they snatched him from Italy and really did imprison him (including 11 years in solitary confinement).  So he probably really did do that on his own, although in strategic terms, he did Israel a huge favor (a deterrent no one knows about is a huge liability for the owner, if only because they'll be more tempted to use it prematurely).
