The main benefit of a college internship is that interns receive college credit.

The work experience itself is meant to provide real world education in addition to their academic education.

Added benefits include the opportunity to network.

Internships offer a lot to college students and it would be a shame for them to lose the opportunity.  Those who liken college internships to slave labor are way off-base.

My nephew took an unpaid internship during the summer after his junior year at college.   Three months before he graduated they offered him a job which he started shortly after graduation.

I know several other people whose college internships led to employment after graduation either directly or indirectly.

college credit for their summer engineering internships, but they were pretty well-paid and gained a wealth of experience.  That was within the last 5 or so years, so I guess they were fortunate.

      The truth always matters.

broad-brush painting going on in the comments here that seems to conflate different types of internships.

I run the program at my university in which we send students to Washington for a semester as interns. They earn a full semester's credit toward their graduation, and we stringently monitor each workplace to make sure they're gaining useful skills.  Without exception, the students testify that it was their favorite semester in college, and the most valuable toward gaining a desirable first job in the political world.

On the other hand, businesses who hire post-graduate "interns," and treat them like employees in every respect except for the salary, are breaking the law and should be punished.
