It's one of the costs of war most people never think of. But moving equipment and troops takes energy -- mostly fossil fuels. Keeping all that somewhat cool (when feasible) in the Middle East takes energy. Those burn pits? An environmental nightmare.

I heard today that we have about 200 uniformed troops in Iraq and about the same number of defense civilians. And we're drawing down Afghanistan.

There is a real environmental savings getting our country out of war and keeping it out of war. DOD will always use a lot of energy, but it does innovate when possible. But when you're sending troops into battle, environmental innovation is not a priority.

Peace is good for the earth, as long as we don't use peacetime prosperity (when it gets here) as an excuse to buy crap we don't need, the manufacturing of which cooks our home planet.

So if you get hit by a bus tonight, would you be satisfied with how you spent today, your last day on earth? Live like tomorrow is never guaranteed, because it's not. -- Me.
