  •  God Bless Jimmy Carter. (8+ / 0-)

I never supported him when he was in office.  I had an irrational hatred for the man.  I supported Ford and then Reagan.  (In my defense, this was at an age when I liked dogs more than girls, so it's not like I was actually responsible for my misguided political views, and my country in its wisdom kept me out of the voting booth.)  I was elated when Reagan won.

There is no single emotion I have ever regretted more.

If Carter had been reelected we wouldn't be in this mess.  Reagan's "There you go again" quip which everyone still remembers and many regard as the moment that won him the election was in response to Carter calling him out for opposing Medicare and calling for universal health care.

Carter had us on the path to energy independence.  Reagan stopped that.

Carter had us on the path to the metric system.  Reagan stopped that.  Now we're one of only three countries that doesn't use it, along with Liberia and Burma.

Carter's foreign policy was tough and steady, but not swaggering.  According to someone I know in the intel community, Carter authorized more covert ops with possible lethal consequences in four years than Reagan did in eight.  Carter never saw this as a measure of his manhood.  He saw this things as deplorable, but necessary.  He would never have bragged about something like that, because he had the decency to be repulsed by what he knew he had to do.  Reagan was all braggadocio.  Just got your ass kicked in Lebanon because you didn't listen to all those who told you that the security measures were inadequate?  No problem.  Pull out and go to war somewhere else.

Ronald Reagan's election was one of the greatest calamities to befall the earth in the latter third of the Twentieth Century.  When I recall the joy I felt at the event, I can only shudder.

Jimmy Carter isn't only the finest former president of this century.

He was a very good president in his own right.

    God Bless Jimmy Carter.
