    and the store was on the corner - you could walk to it - or ride a bike.  Not the suburban supermarket.

      There was a small place about 2 blocks from home (the limit of where I could go) called Deerwesters that was primarily a hamburger/malt/soda  place ....a big hangout for highschoolers in the 50s. Up by the cash register was a glass case with a couple of shelves displaying the penny candy. I would walk up there with the family of girls next door, and I swear by the time we all made our choices Mrs. Deerwester needed the Maalox. She was a bit of a sourpuss with no patience for little kids, and I'm sure  she cringed when she saw us walk in.
       Oh those were the days! We would leave clutching our little brown bags of candies and then sit and munch and do trades. It was heaven.

          I can't remember what they were called, but it was a long piece of paper with different colored dots of candy glued to it. I do remember eating the candy and having to spit out bits of paper if the candy was too well glued on. Oh, and the ones I called mothballs. They were round and white with a hazelnut in the center.
