    In cases like green energy, the government isn't trying to "pick winners and losers in the private sector." They're trying to build up a certain sector of private enterprise because it benefits the public by reducing pollution. The US government has been subsidizing private enterprise for centuries (remember the railroads) for far more dubious reasons in far more dubious ways.

    But Obama wasn't really talking about that, because those really are collective benefit kinds of investments, and not redistributive in ways that heavy benefit the poor like schools and libraries.

      without a difference.

      In the case of subsidized green energy firms, it sure seems like in the case of the 19 or so that have declared bankruptcy or are likely to, billions of taxpayers' money was redistributed trying to pick winners, while the EPA is busy fingering the losers.
