        •  they might not remember a Punt is a small boat (0+ / 0-)

although, technically, a Punt has no provision for a sail and is most often propelled by a pole rather than oars......

It would be sweet to run across a Punt Gun though.....

            •  yes technically, I am sure people have (0+ / 0-)

mounted a sail on a Punt ..... Hell someone has probably installed  a Big Block Chevy engine in a Punt....

That does not change the fact that the definition of Punt (noun) is a squared bow flat bottomed boat that is poled along shallow water ...... The act of punting, to Punt (verb), is to pole said square bowed flat bottomed boat down the river

didn't mean to start a mini pie fight.

Also, to punt as in kick hopefully for the line, (rugby) probably Irish, and to take a punt on a horse (both the place a unit of Irish currency to to accept long odds) - both appropriate here.

                The idea of
                * a pink ribbon (International breast cancer day symbol - like he gives a shit about women's health) embodied in
                * a flat-bottomed, pole driven, bloody heavy shallow stream vessel (the protected waters he usually drifts along in) that has got itself into
                * a raging storm (the snake pit of retail politics) to the point where its
                * sail sheets (usually 3, and for which it is not designed) are
                * "to the wind", ie not tied to the ship which is now being driven about like
                * a drunken sailor (the derived meaning of 3 sheets to the wind and compeltely forbidden to RMoney) and
                * out of control made perfect sense in describing the RMoney fiasco because it is scrambled.

                But yeah, scrambled.

your understanding of it is not complete .
All the references were to boats .
It would make sense if you were thinking of boats on talk like a pirate day and knew nautical terms .

I have now been sailing the duck punt for several months and have mastered the skill needed to truly enjoy the boat in any wind condition
                http://en.wikipedia.org/...
The Norfolk Punt was derived from the flat-bottomed gun punts that roamed the Broadland waters in the mid-to-late 19th century. However, at the turn of the 20th Century, in order to get to and from the hunting grounds more efficiently, the punters developed their highly unstable craft to carry a basic mast and sail for travelling with the wind. It is from these humble beginnings that one of the country’s most exciting and powerful racing dinghy classes was born.

                http://www.royallsboatyard.com/...

In May 1990 following the launch of a wooden, open marshman’s punt for customers in Belaugh, I launched my own newly built gun-punt called PLOVER, at just over 17ft long and 3ft wide she was loosely based on a 21ft two man punt by Everson’s of Woodbridge that at that time, I maintained for a chap in Norwich who’s father had gone crew in her during the 1950’s as puntsman on the river Alde. The first gun-punt that I remember seeing though was moored in Ted Ellis’s dyke at Wheatfen Broad around 1984, it had been built by a chap with an outboard bracket so that he could motor to and from the local pubs so as to bypass the drink driving laws, any way she was a pretty little thing.

Falmouth Quay Punts were well-established by around 1870 as working sailing boats that ferried stores, gear and even ballast to and from the square-riggers that used the Port of Falmouth. To compete for custom from the ships' captains, they used to sail out to sea to meet ships, and they were also regularly raced by their owners, alongside others built purely as yachts, in local regattas for which there were substantial sums as cash prizes. Most working punts were yawl rigged, with removable topmasts allowing a low mainmast to let the punts lie alongside square-riggers without the masts fouling the ship's yards.
